I agree with the general sentiment of what you read earlier. Gaylord National is a bit of an oasis in an area otherwise in the earliest stages of gentrification.

The challenge is that you don%26#39;t want to stay anywhere close east or south of Gaylord, and anything north towards Washington will likely be as expensive as Gaylord.

Hotels in Alexandria, Virginia (west of Gaylord, across the river) will probably be less expensive in a nicer area, but that leaves you with the need to cross the river. If you don%26#39;t have a car, public transportation options are very limited. If you need to take a taxi or shuttle, that may negate any savings you realize. Note that Gaylord charges $19/day to park your own (rental) car.

Also look at hotels near Reagan National Airport. Reagan would be the preferred airport, but they only handle domestic air traffic only (you would need to connect from/to U.K. through an international airport, e.g. Boston or New York), and flights are typically more expensive than the other airports further from Gaylord. The SuperShuttle from Reagan to Gaylord runs both ways every half-hour at a cost of $22 each way.

How much are the accomodations offered at Gaylord, and for what specific nights are you looking? You may need to bite the bullet and pay them because of the lack of affordable, comfortable options nearby. For my money, it wouldn%26#39;t be worth the hassle to stay elsewhere if the room price differential is under $100/night.

Just to clarify--the National Harbor area is safe and there are other decent hotels right there besides the Gaylord (Hampton Inn, Westin).

But if those others at the National Harbor complex aren%26#39;t cheap enough for you, avoid the other hotels in the Oxon Hill area entirely.
