Good restaurant near Baltimore International Airport

We are looking for recommendations for a good restaurant (not picky on type) near Baltimore International Airport. Looking for something easily accessible with good food and atmosphere.

Good restaurant near Baltimore International Airport

The silence here is deafening - LOL! While the County exec has great plans to make the airport area a destination ';aerotropolis'; - it certainly isn%26#39;t quite that yet. In the immediate area, I think your best bet would be to go to a restaurant in one of the pricier hotels in the vicinity. Most of the hotels are grouped together, so getting from one to another is quite easy. Other than that, I think you might consider going into Baltimore (easy via light rail) which has many, many options that would fit the bill.

Good restaurant near Baltimore International Airport

';Easily Accesible'; by...rental car? Taxi? Hotel shuttle?

There is good Mexican food at Los Portales near the airport. And G%26amp;M is famous for their crabcakes, not too far away.

I have to second G%26amp;M Restaurant. It%26#39;s very close by, easily found and accessible, and the crab cakes are some of the finest anywhere.

Yeah, I know alot of people swear by G %26amp; M%26#39;s crab cakes, - I think they%26#39;re overrated, personally, but the poster asked for a place with nice atmoshphere? I guess everyone has different tastes, but I wouldn%26#39;t put G %26amp; M in that category. It%26#39;s more of a neighbood kind of place - that can be great fun, too, - depends on what you%26#39;re looking for. Timbuktu has better crab cakes (IMO) and is also easy to get to from the Airport, but still not what I would call an upscale kind of place.

'; but the poster asked for a place with nice atmoshphere? I guess everyone has different tastes, but I wouldn%26#39;t put G %26amp; M in that category. ';

Oh, I agree, I missed that - I was focused on the ';not picky'; part, but they DID say they wanted a nice atmosphere...in which case I can%26#39;t really think of anything around the airport that would qualify!

  • Getting around Baltimore

Am in town just after xmas for the last Ravens home game. We are staying on W Lombard St. How safe or easy is it to walk to the Stadium from there? Or is there a better way?

    Any help appreciated.

    Getting around Baltimore

If you%26#39;re on W. Lombard I%26#39;m going to guess it%26#39;s the Holiday Inn?

You would be walking to and from the stadium with thousands of other people, with tons of traffic in the street as well. About a 15 minute walk.

Thanks, you got it. Looking forward to it.

    the wire

hello all, im from liverpool, england and im a massive fan of the tv series the wire.baltimore reminds me alot of my home city and i was wondering if they do any tours associated with the show.all the best ...dave

    the wire

I too am a HUGE fan of ';The Wire'; and consider it the best show that has ever aired on televison.

I don%26#39;t know if there is a guided tour of places from ';The Wire'; but the Baltimore Museum of Industry has an exhibit featuring local scences from the show. Check out this weblink:

    http://www.thebmi.org/index.cfm/cID/674

I can recommend one place to visit and that is Faidley%26#39;s in Lexington Market. In season 2, McNulty and his boys ';shadowed'; Stringer Bell while walking through the market and in Season 4, Omar was enjoying fish he bought from Faidley%26#39;s while on a stakeout of Marlo%26#39;s gang.

I can HIGHLY recommend getting a broiled lump crabcake from Faidley%26#39;s, you won%26#39;t be disappointed.

    the wire

No commercial tours AFAIK. I suspect the demand is somewhat limited given the neighborhoods involved.

The show ';Homicide,'; another popular series shot in Baltimore in the %26#39;90s, never had its own tour, but some of the locations were pointed out by generic tour guides in parts of the city like Fells Point. It%26#39;s doubtful any commercial tours will just happen to be going through The Wire%26#39;s neighborhoods.

But there is good news for the determined. Here%26#39;s an article, self-guided tour and map from Baltimore%26#39;s City Paper:

  • This weekend's weather

Hi, planning to come to Baltimore this weekend but I am wondering if I should postpone it due to the weather. It%26#39;s our first time in Baltimore and we were looking forward to walking around and seeing the sights. Any idea how bad the rain will be there?

    This weekend's weather

it%26#39;s so hard to say...sometimes they predict it %26amp; it doesn%26#39;t come.

we%26#39;re a bit northwest of the city and are personally EXPECTING a pretty wet %26amp; crummy weekend but ya never know!

    This weekend's weather

It seems the forecast has changed a bit. If you are expecting a rain free trip, that probably won%26#39;t happen. However, the deluge of rain that was predicted seems to have now been changed to sporadic showers and occassional thundershowers. Winds may still be a bit stiff, but the gusts they were predicting has not happened here yet.

    The Brampton Inn

The Brampton Inn is located in Chestertown, Maryland in Kent County. My husband and I have stayed here several times as it is a short drive and wonderful getaway from Philadelphia. Both the common rooms and the individual rooms are comfortable and beautifully decorated. The food at both breakfast and tea is delicious. There are always choices such as egg dishes as well as sweeter entrees such as french toast. The muffins are the best. Michael and Danielle are the very best innkeepers I have come across. They are warm and helpful, but never intrusive. The town of Chestertown offers good restaurants (The Imperial Inn is good for brunch and dinner), cute shops (I never miss the independently owned bookstore as well as the gift shop, Twigs and Teacups)and is a pleasure to walk around. I%26#39;ve been on house tours which are also very interesting. Last year we were there just after Thanksgiving and watched Santa Claus come to town in the fire truck -- the culmination of a parade. I highly recommend spending some time in this area and staying at the Brampton.

How to get from Megabus to downtown?

Hi all. I%26#39;m considering taking the Megabus from NYC for a trip to Baltimore soon because it%26#39;s just so darn cheap. ($13!)

But the darn thing doesn%26#39;t stop in Baltimore. It seems to stop at a park and ride in White Marsh. So how do I get to Baltimore from there? I looked at the schedule for the MTA express buses, and they seem to run only during rush hour.

    Thanks.

How to get from Megabus to downtown?

You have to take the local, #15 from White March to downtown. And at about 75 minutes for the trip, it truly is a ';local';...

  • How to make your own bed sheets
  • That was a fun Sunfest weekend.

Had a great time this weekend. Got to Tidelands Carribean hotel at 12:30 and our room was ready. I was a tad bit nervous about the room after reading the reviews. The staff was great, the room big and clean and quiet.

Our friends stayed at Park Place and they really liked their room/hotel. We had a few ';welcome to OC'; drinks at the outdoor bar there at Park Place. The bartenders were great. Walked the boardwalk for awhile and people watched. Headed down to M.R. Ducks and enjoyed the view of the water.

I will say it was windy and cool. Saturday was even worse. The ocean looked very angry.

Did the arts and crafts thing a the inlet. Walked away with a new piece of art for the house. Our friends got a really nice handmade quilt.

Headed to Seacrets and got there about 2:30. It was the 1st time for our friends and they were amazed by the place. We sat at the boatbar and took it all in. The Jim Long band started playing after a couple of hours and we stayed for 1/2 theire set. By then all the adult beverages were taking their toll on us lol. Of course had to stop of at the merchandise area. Went home with 2 full bags of stuff. note to self....don%26#39;t purchase stuff when you have a healthy buzz going on.

Sunday we walked the beach for awhile, grabed some awesome fried oysters for breakfast and walked around the side streets for awhile. Then we all went to M.R. Ducks and watched the Skin%26#39;s game. Skin%26#39;s won....it was a great day.

Oh almost forgot. Hit Boardwalk Joe%26#39;s for breakfast. Had about a 10 min wait for a table, placed our order and it was at our table in less then 5 min!!!

I have never been served food that fast. The food is cheap and very tasty. When we were at Seacrets we ordered some app%26#39;s and they came in less then 10 min. Ordered steak and cheese subs and fries from Dough Roller, 10 min and the sub%26#39;s were surprisingly good.

Was really disappointed come Mon morn%26#39; when it was time to leave. The weather was friggin%26#39; awesome and there was no wind. Came so close to calling into work and taking an extra day.

That was a fun Sunfest weekend.

Now where you went wrong, flattop, was to not hit Seacrets on Sunday afternoon. Spectacular weather %26amp; the ';customer appreciation'; Pig Roast was even better this year with raw %26amp; steamed oysters included.

Plenty of eye candy as well on the water floats.

Got to watch one ';tipsy'; gal get the ';bum%26#39;s rush'; courtesy of the ';Peace Police.'; Then she moans she lost her purse so we all scoured the murky waters around the floats with no success...the lush probably left it back at the hotel.

That was a fun Sunfest weekend.

daddio, I tried so hard to talk our friends to go there Sunday. They weren%26#39;t having any part of it because of the bus system. They didn%26#39;t want to have to wait 30 min each time to be able to get on a bus.

Next year we%26#39;re going on our own and won%26#39;t have to worry about not making it to places we want to hit.

We also missed Seacrets Sunday, we hit the beach instead and then watched some football at Whiskers pub(a big Redskins nest)of course I had my mother- in-law along for the weekend so we sort of catered to her which was fine, we all had a great weekend in O.C.

OK - someone educate me. What is the bum%26#39;s rush from the peace police?

It%26#39;s the security guy%26#39;s in orange t-shirts at Seacrets.

I see. Well I will have to make sure to avoid them if we get to OC next summer.

flattop, Glad to hear you had a great time!

We unfortunately had to cancel our plans to attend Sunfest because of a family emergency, so we never made it down to enjoy it.

Hopefully we%26#39;ll make Springfest next year. Never been to that.

We checked out all the stands and once again just could not find anything that got us reaching for our wallets. I will be quick to add that I understand what expenses must be for the participants just to attend the show, let alone make their creations, so I%26#39;m not faulting their pricing.

I did see a few really nice items that were maybe worth the price for a special gift or a splurge for yourself. Food %26amp; drink prices were up a little from last year...$3.00 for a 12 oz. brewsk %26amp; $6.00-7.00 for a burger or sandwich.

However, I did see plenty of people spending money and carting around purchases, so I suppose the standholders had a decent response. The longest line I saw was composed of deep-pocketed Sunfesters willing to fork over $9.00 for a 6'; cheesesteak (or $14.00 for a 12';...WHEW!). I%26#39;d say that line was as long or longer than the one at Thrasher%26#39;s.

This was heartening to see since economisits are predicting a bleak holiday season for retailers.

    Trip report Sept. 19-23

We enjoyed our long weekend in Baltimore, which was much warmer than Boston (low 60%26#39;s in MA, upper 70%26#39;s in MD). Friday evening took a harbor cruise on the Spirit of Baltimore, and would recommend this to others. Saturday was Fells Point day (met a friend from MD who hadn%26#39;t been to that neighborhood in a while), with a nice lunch at Shuckers, gelato, and wandering around the shops. Also toured the USS Consellation- very interesting! Toured Fort McHenry, a must-see. Sunday after church toured ';Mount Vernon'; neighborhood, including the excellent Walters Art Museum. I disagree with the ';walking tour map'; description of ';Antique Row'; on Howard Street, at least on a Sunday afternoon it%26#39;s not worth the detour unless you are a die-hard antiquer, and then only 1 store was open. However, the used book store on Read Street was too cute, with yummy baked goods and cafe tables. Walked back along N. Charles street w/ stores, coffee shops, etc. Took a look at the Sports Legends Museum, sure to be a hit with tourists of all ages. Took a Duck Tour Monday, enjoyable and funny information, and had a great crab/shrimp wrap at the Phillip%26#39;s Express in the shopping area near the visitor%26#39;s center. The Aquarium was nice (detailed info in ';things to do'; tab), and the Lightship Chesapeake, Coast Guard Ship Taney, and Lighthouse were also interesting. All in all, the people I met were friendly, the food was great, and the sights were educational and fun.

    Trip report Sept. 19-23

Wow - You packed a lot into a few days, glad you had a good time.

    Trip report Sept. 19-23

very glad you enjoyed yourself %26amp; saw so much!

nice to hear that people have enjoyed our city!

btw, i%26#39;ve always enjoyed YOUR city, too!

wow you did a lot! great TR, thanks.

i work right next door to shuckers.

glad you got to see ft. mchenry ( i cry when the curtain draws back and they play the national anthem! ) Lol...

the uss constellation is very cool.

next time in fells point go to grille 700 for a crabcake in the marriott waterfront hotel, or find one eyed mike%26#39;s for incredible food from a lil hole in the wall bar.

agree w/ previous poster, boston is fun too.

Closest Hotel to the Action at Winefest

Our house is on 26th; we walkdown in the morning and ride the bus home in the evening.

The Grand (about 20th) and the Dunes Mator (about 30th)are nice and not too far.

Keep this in mind with the bus service, The busses do not run as frequently as they do in the summer months. You can be waiting awhile for that bus this weekend.

    http://www.ococean.com/busflyer.html

    Bus schedule is very do-able.

You can post the hours they are open but can you tell how frequently the busses go up the coast or how many are in service. Maybe they will increase the manpower for this weekend but for what I saw this past weekend the bus service was down-graded a good bit. I could have walked half the boardwalk before you say a bus.

Thanks everyone. Unfortunately, every single place I called requires a 12 night minimum and we only want to stay on the 28th. I am so ticked!

I would think since it is this close that threy would want to rent the room and not worry about a 2 night minimum.

If we still cannot find one, I guess we won%26#39;t go!

    Try this place http://www.beachwalkhotel.com/

They might do just one night. I%26#39;ve stayed there before and the place is clean, located at 10th and boardwalk. Now one thing to warn is the rooms are very small. But heck, we used it for sleeping at thats all that was important. Hope this helps.

I would not give up yet, Winefest is too good to pass up. I checked expedia and the clarion on 101st street did have rooms for just the 28th and I checked the Francis Scott Key Motel website and they also have rooms for one night http://www.fskmotel.com/main.cfm. FSK is in West OC, which is about a 3min. cab ride to Winefest. Fsk has Marlin Moon Grill on the property and they have some of the best food in OC. Also what the hotels are doing now is holding on to the 2 night min for to get as many rooms booked as they can, but the closer you get to next weekend they will drop it if they have rooms to sell. Good Luck!

I spent three different weeks in Ocean City this summer and ALWAYS saw vacancy signs. There will be plenty of rooms available as long as you don%26#39;t need to stay within 5 blocks of the festival. Marlin Moon at the FSK hotel does have delicious food, just a bit pricy. Other side of the Route 50 Bridge is a good suggestion. I never felt like I had to wait that long for a bus during wine fest, maybe because I%26#39;m generally not in a hurry and enjoy talking to people.

Well, we didn%26#39;t go and by the weather reports, I am glad we didn%26#39;t. They are being pounded by rain and will not see better weather until Monday.

The last thing I would want to do is hang around Inlet park in the rain drinking wine.

Heck, we are just going to Key West in November.

    Non-seafood report from 9/13-9/20 trip

Thank you for so many great recommendations for non-seafood restaurants. We had a awesome time in OC and can%26#39;t believe we%26#39;ve already been home for about a week.

I%26#39;ll list some the places we ate and what we thought..

Dough Roller on the boardwalk: We%26#39;ve made our final trip to this restaurant. Just not a fan of the pizza.

Big Peckers: LOVED this place. We have a toddler, so arrived about 4pm to avoid the bar rush. DH had a bacon cheese burger ($8.50). Burger very good, but only 2 small pieces of bacon. I had one with mushrooms, onion and green pepper (8.50). YUM and both cooked to perfection. HUGE! We also ordered an appetizer of fried veggies. Very good, arrived in about 5 minutes and only $5.99--the basket was overflowing and we ate our fill and still had 1/2 to go.

Smokers BBQ: Found it on 611 in West OC. Wow!! What a little jewel!! We carried it back to the condo 2 times (less than $16 both times)and ate there one time (fried chicken and kids meal $25). DH loved the brisket sandwich and the sausage bean soup. I had chopped pork, very good. The sides we tried were all pretty good-coleslaw, fries, baked beans, tomato cucumber salad. We wouldn%26#39;t order the garlic green beans or the fried chicken 2nd time.

Anthony%26#39;s carved beef: Shared a large roastbeef sub ($12.99). Very yummy and lots of meat.

Fracture Prune: Had to try the doughnuts. Ick..won%26#39;t be eating those things again. Don%26#39;t get me wrong, we eat fried food quite often, these were just too greasy and the toppings were way too ';fake'; tasting.

J %26amp; J%26#39;s Pizzeria: YUM!! What a great find!! This is in W. OC between the outlet shopping and Wal-Mart. We were disappointed that we discovered this place on our last night. Woodfire pizzas. We ordered a large pepperoni and mushroom, a side salad and 1 soda ($20). The sauce was excellent-light, not too sweet and the crust was thin and just the right crispy.

Warren Station in Fenwick: Great family restaurant. On the main road, not too far over the state line. Very reasonable prices. We arrived about 2:30 and were still on the lunch menu. I had a salad with a scoop of tuna salad and turkey salad ($7-both very tasty and I%26#39;d order them again) and DH had a club sandwich and fries ($7). Baby ate off my plate as usual. This place was just closing up for the season. It was opened many years ago by a turkey farmer and I guess they are known for their turkey dinners-only on the dinner menu ($10). We will definately eat here on the next trip.

Boardwalk food: Thrashers (only once, but WOW!:), Polish water ice-watermelon, Kohr%26#39;s frozen custard, Fisher popcorn, tons of trips to Wockenfuss for various treats to include King Tut, and chocolate shells.

At Sunfest in the food tent we had Pit Ham and Turkey sandwiches with potato salad (best I ever had) and coleslaw. Very good, just a tad pricey as expected.

I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;m forgetting some places, but I hit the highlights of this gluttony adventure!! :)

    Non-seafood report from 9/13-9/20 trip

Wow, I%26#39;m hungry now after reading your review. Thank%26#39;s for the report. We did the food tent place too last weekend. We had the fried oysters (2 small containers) and 2 soda%26#39;s..... $24.00 OUCH !!

But those were some of the best oysters I%26#39;ve ever had.

    Non-seafood report from 9/13-9/20 trip

Thanks for the trip report. I love J%26amp;J%26#39;S pizza too. They have a great deal right now a pizza and pitcher of beer for $15.99. Sounds like you had a fun time.

Glad to hear someone else from TA has been to J %26amp; J. Have you ever eaten at the restaurant next door. They said they were affilated with them and it does look like they share a kitchen for non-pizza items. Osterman?? Something like that..

Flattop! I knew from your posts that you were going to be in town for Sunfest. I was wondering if I%26#39;d see someone that looked like your picture while we were cruising the tents. Friday was an excellent day for the Sunfest with the temps so low. Think how hot those crowded tents would have been if it had been any warmer! :)

Many years ago I was in Toledo on business and ate at a steak house on the Maumee River.I think it was called Frank Unkles or somthing like that.

Best New York strip I ever had.

Frank%26#39;s is gone now. There is a sports bar in the building now. :) Actually, I don%26#39;t live too far from that location.

Would love for you to post your reviews in the restaurant section. It is easier for paper to search when just looking for food in OC.

Which Fractured Prune? The one on 28ths the best, several others are ';franchises'; and just not the same. BTW, Anthony%26#39;s makes a great breakfast too.

Great idea, I%26#39;ll do that when I have a few extra minutes.

We did go to the Fractured Prune on 28th. And we certainly went wanting to like it, but alas, we were disappointed. :(

Leaving Car Multiple Days at White Marsh Park n Ride

Is it allowable to leave a car at White Marsh Park n Ride for two or three weekdays? Or will one return to find the car ticketed and/or towed? Are there regulations on this issue? I could%26#39;nt find anything on this issue on the MD DOT or MBTA web sites.

  • Goin to OC - Sat thru Tuesday....any tips for family of 5??

We are going to Ocean City for the weekend. It will be the first time my kids ever saw the ocean :) They are 10, 8 and 6. So far we are planning on going to see the ponies, walk the boards, go to Harrisons Harbor watch for dinner and get take out crabs one night and maybe hit the outlets.

Does anyone have any other ideas...or places to go -- maybe someplace that would be good for breakfast with 3 kids. Anything else that would be fun? I know they are having Winefest but with 3 kids, what fun is that??

Goin to OC - Sat thru Tuesday....any tips for family of 5??

Mini golf is a must for an Ocean City visit! Riding bikes on the Boardwalk is fun for the whole family. Bike rentals are readily available

Goin to OC - Sat thru Tuesday....any tips for family of 5??

We just got back from OC and had a wonderful, but very windy, time!!! We spend a good deal of time at Assateague and this year we saw something that we had not seen before! There, right along the road was a foal and his mother!!!! Your kids should be on the look out for that! Maybe take them crabbing for fun. All it takes is some string line and some chicken necks for bait! You might not catch many keepers, but it is fun to try to bring them in slowly and net them before they let go and swim away! You can even get all the stuff you%26#39;ll need at any bait/tackle store or even grocery store. Net, line and bait for less than $15.00! As for breakfast, Layton%26#39;s is good, but usually very busy! We went to the Sahara hotel diner and had a wonderful breakfast with fast, friendly service and also great food! That might be a good spot that is also reasonable with 3 kids!

I%26#39;m betting the ocean will captivate the kids at those ages. The weather is turning %26amp; ocean temps have dropped into the 60%26#39;s, but I%26#39;m guessing they will still want to get wet...maybe invest in boogie boards for them.

My folks starting taking us to the shore every year from infants on up %26amp; now we can%26#39;t stay away...I just can%26#39;t imagine being 8 or 10 for a first visit.

Here%26#39;s hoping you enjoy it enought to start making the annual pilgrimmage!

A great place to go with kids that age is Frontier Town. Here is the web site. http://www.frontiertown.com/western.cfm

It is on the other side of the bridge. You can also find go carts on that side as well.

The Satellite up by the 45th Street shopping plaza is a great place for breakfast - they have a huge menu with many kid sized breakfast meals. I would suggest stopping by the Harborside for lunch or dinner one day. It%26#39;s right on the harbor in West OC and your kids will be able to see all the big commercial fishing boats there. Just go over the Route 50 bridge and turn left on Golf Course Road (2nd light), follow Golf Course Road around the harbor and you will see the Harborside.

    Hotel near Baltimore Washington International

I am looking for a nice hotel nearest BWI. We will be checking in late and leaving very early the next morning. The closest to the airport the better. Thank you for your help.

    Hotel near Baltimore Washington International

    ';The closest to the airport the better.';

Nearly every hotel that markets itself as being located in the BWI area--and there are 25 of them that use ';BWI Airport'; as part of their official names--are within 5 miles (5-10 minutes) of the BWI terminal. Does it really matter to you if it%26#39;s five minutes away instead of ten minutes?

If it is that important, Four Points by Sheraton is right next to the airport. If you want something nice in the 5-10 minute range, I%26#39;d go with the Hilton Garden Inn.

Which BWI Airport would you AVOID!!???

Help deciding end of touring trip....

    Hello,

I hope you can help. My husband %26amp; I are planning two weeks in the region and I need help deciding on the last part of my tour.

So far we are staying 4 nights in Washington DC, a night in Shenandoah NP, 2 nights in Charlottesville %26amp; 3 nights in Williamsburg.

This leaves me with 4 nights to play with to see some of the Eastern shore %26amp; perhaps Baltimore.

I would like a contract between brash %26amp; quiet so initially earmarked 2 nights on Chincoteague %26amp; two nights in OCMD.

Then I started reading about Annapolis, St Michaels, Lewes etc %26amp; am undecided. Should we just day trip around or are all of these places of a similar vibe we could perhaps leave from OCMD %26amp; wander through them for a full day with the intention of ending up in Baltimore for an evening %26amp; the following day before we catch our overnight flight back to the UK?

Should we just choose one to explore in more depth or is it a case of an hour or so wandering around a couple would give us an idea of the atmosphere?

We are just the two of us %26amp; will have a rental car. As you can see from our itenarary so far our tastes are very eclectic!

We will be travelling off season in the last two weeks of September.

    Thanks in advance!

Help deciding end of touring trip....

Well being that I am an Annapolis resident for 5 years, I am partial to the town and it%26#39;s environs. One suggestion would be to stay in Annapolis, right in the historic district.

You can take a day or two to meander the historical streets and homes, enjoy the numerous shops and restaurants, and take a tour of the Naval Academy, State House, etc. They now have a boat excursion from Annapolis that takes you to St. Micheals in the morning and takes you back in the late afternoon. We have our own boat, so I have not taken the actual cruise, but I am sure you wouldn%26#39;t be disappointed. The trip is lovely from a boater%26#39;s vantage point. www.watermarkcruises.com The only caveat is they sail only on Saturdays during September.

Also, Baltimore is an easy drive from here. However, if you want to experience the ';ocean';, than I would recommend Rehoboth Beach Delaware or Lewes, Deleware. If you like the old fashioned boardwalks with cheap t-shirt shops and cotton candy, then OC Maryland, might be your ticket. If you are looking for a little less neon, and a bit more sophistication, than I would stick to the Delaware beaches.

Help deciding end of touring trip....

This is a tough question. The reason it%26#39;s difficult, is that in each place, you can get the ';gist'; of it by walking through in an hour or two - but you won%26#39;t have found its soul. If you just want the sampler plate, you can ';do'; annapolis or St.Michaels in a few hours, Beautiful Photo Ops abound. But you would miss the historic house tours, the water-oriented activities, the maritime museum, the naval academy, most of the local fare, etc. Annapolis is about 2 1/2 hours from Ocean City assuming there is no traffic. That is a big assumption, and you would need to time your trip to avoid the weekend exodus to/from the Beach and the weekday rush hours, which cause a bottleneck at the Bay Bridge. I don%26#39;t think of Annapolis as a day-trip from Ocean City. It would have to be its own stop, perhaps with Baltimore as a day trip.

Thanks for the quick responses I agree it is a tough one.

I%26#39;ve had a look over the overall itinerary to see if I can skim a day from somewhere else to try %26amp; fit more in but listening to your replys I have the following questions:

I thought my ';wilderness'; bit was Chincoteague but perhaps I should skip that altogether if the beaches in Delaware will give me more of the windswept kind of unspoilt vibe...your thoughts? It would be a long day but we could leave Williamsburg in the AM %26amp; drive through the Virginia part of the coastline (my husband is desperate to go over the long bridge!) ending up in OCMD that day with the intent to explore around the Ocean side over the next couple of days before crossing to Annapolis.

My second question - Our flight leaves BWI at 9.30pm on the Saturday night. Will it be easier to get there return car etc from Annapolis or downtown Baltimore or is it irrelevant? What time would we need to be heading away from either place?

I%26#39;m looking at the suggestions to do a day trip to Baltimore from Annapolis or the Saturday cruise from Annapolis to St Michaels.

    Thanks Again

I have not been to Chincoteaque in many years. However, the unspoiled, windswept beaches that you describe are very much in existance at Assateague, which is an easy and enjoyable day trip from Ocean City or the Delaware beaches.

BWI airport is about 30 minutes from both Baltimore and Annapolis. Allow 40 minutes if you%26#39;re cumpulsive, like me.

The last two weeks of September can be beautiful weather - most of the crowds will be gone from Ocean City, except that the weekends can be quite busy there and in St. Michaels, if the weather is nice. I like the idea of the boat trip to St. Michaels, if the weather is good. Another idea would be to visit St. Michaels on your way back from the Ocean. It%26#39;s about 15 - 20 minutes off the direct route to the Bay Bridge.

The previous poster is right. There is really not too much difference between Assateague Island and Chincoteague. If you look on a map, you can see that it is the same island but separated by invisible State lines.

    Some mileage stats for you:

Ocean City to Assateague State Park: 10 miles.

Ocean City to Rehoboth Beach Delaware: 30 miles

If you chose to stay in Rehoboth instead of OC, you could enjoy some unspoiled and serene ocean front at Cape Henlopen State Park which is about 11 miles from the beach town. It is beautiful, with miles of trails, free bike rentals, and beaches. (This would then take the place of OC and Assateaugue or Chincoteague).

Other benefits if you are in the buying mode courtesy of the weak dollar, Delaware has tax free shopping and high end outlets GALORE! We often drive here just to do Christmas shopping.

From OC or Rehoboth it is a bit less than a three hour drive to Annapolis. Timing is important since you will be going across another bridge (Bay Bridge is approx. 5 miles long). So avoiding rush hour can make your ride a bit less congested. Sounds like you will be heading Westbound at the beginning of the weekend which is great, cause traffic Westbound on Sundays can be a bear with beach goers going home by the thousands.

Since your flight is quite early, I would strongly urge that you at least be close enough the night before (Baltimore or Annapolis) so that you don%26#39;t have to make a long journey to BWI especially as it relates to crossing the bridge. Construction, accidents etc, can make getting to the other side very difficult.

If you need any hotel suggestions please ask. If you are interested in staying in Annapolis I urge you to consider making reservations soon. There is always something going on here, events, Navy Football games, Parents weekends etc, that cause local lodging to fill up early and fast. I don%26#39;t think you will be disappointed in whatever you choose. Sounds like you have a nice itinerary and I hope you have a great trip.

i agree, you could skip chincoteague %26amp; see assateague on the maryland side instead, if you want the wild pony experience....%26amp; rehoboth is DEFINITELY a lot more charming than ocean city! it still has a small boardwalk with all the ticky-tacky stuff...but it%26#39;s a much more sophisticated little town with wonderful small independent shops %26amp; a generally more ';adult'; atmosphere than ocean city.

    tough decisions!

should probably say this, too....you can NOT drive directly from the virginia side of assateague island to the maryland side. not even on the beach with 4 wheel drive!

but you can get, say, to rehoboth from williamsburg in a day. %26amp; do a day trip from rehoboth to maryland%26#39;s assateague, easy.

Hi Everyone - Thank You again for all your input. I wish they were so forthcoming in the Virginia forum...

Anyway I%26#39;ll tell you what I%26#39;ve decided so far.....

Chincoteague is GONE, wherever we stay we will do a trip back to Assateague for the day.

The new plan is as follows:

Leave Williamsburg - drive up to MD (by lunch). This will hopefully be Reheboth Beach but may still be OC, the reason being the total bargins for a suite in OC. If I can find comparable deals in RB it will be a done deal.

Wherever we end up we will stay three nights. One will be used to go back south to Assateague, one will be used to go North to Lewes or Cape Henlopen and we will also hopefully squeeze in the outlets!

So - we then leave the ocean side and my next plan is this - drive towards St Michaels %26amp; have a wander round before crossing to Annapolis in the afternoon(this will be Thursday).

Staying in Annapolis Thursday and Friday night. But on the Friday, if possible getting public transport to Baltimore? The reason I say that is that there is a baseball game on Friday night %26amp; I thought we could spend all day exploring Baltimore %26amp; finish up at the game. Not bothered if we have to leave before it%26#39;s finished but perhaps seeing an hour or so. We have visited so many baseball grounds on our travels and always like to compare the similarities and differences.

We would then return to Annapolis to go to bed Friday night. On Saturday we would need to check out of our hotel, but as our flight is not till 9.30pm at night we would have all day to explore more of Annapolis - I thought this could be quite relaxing at the end of our trip. We would probably conclude with an early dinner before setting off to the airport around 6.30pm to give us time to drop the car etc.

    How does that sound everyone?

    Thanks Again

I think it sounds great! In regards to getting public transportation from Annapolis to Baltimore, I%26#39;m afraid there is no direct connections.

It is a shame that Annapolis does not have rail service to Baltimore or DC considering it is only 30 miles away and congestion around here is such a problem.

One idea would be to drive your car to BWI airport where they have their ';lite rail'; service. There is a parking garage adjacent to the station which is at the International Pier at BWI terminal. From here, the train takes you right to the Camden rail station. (a 20-25 minute ride)

BWI airport also has an Amtrak/Marc station that services Baltimore %26amp; DC but the trains do not stop right at Camden station. You would have to go to Penn station in Baltimore and transfer to the light rail. Check out www.mtamaryland.com/services/sports/orioles

if this does not direct you to the site than google- mta service to oriole park

Also, if you are interested in just seeing Camden yards and not necessarily seeing a game, I believe they still offer tours of the ballpark. Just go to the Camden Yards website for more information.

if you can%26#39;t find something at the price you want in rehoboth, try dewey beach.

it%26#39;s a much smaller town than rehoboth but they%26#39;re right next to each other....they sort of ';flow together';.

    The Wonderful Seahawk and restaurants

First - I am a travel agent from New Jersey. I have traveled all over the world and stayed at mostly 4-5 star resorts as an adult. Why did i try this motel? We were going away again 4 weeks later and i was trying to save money. I saw all of the 4-5 star ratings for what i thought was going to be a hole in the wall - but to my surprise, all i can say is WOW ! the week to go to Ocean City - has to be the last weekend in August. You can move around and not wait 3 hours for dinner. I only spent 3 nights there and wish it had been more! The staff was so kind and helpful. Linda - you still need to join our canasta league!

Beds .... i cannot sleep in most hotel beds. Many times after 1 night - i%26#39;m purchasing an aerobed to sleep on. Both my husband and I feel the same. These beds were the most comfortable beds we%26#39;d ever slept on. The place was so clean you could eat off of the floors. Don%26#39;t get me wrong - this is not a high end anything -it%26#39;s just perfect. When i was a kid, we stayed in a motel like this in Florida.

I can%26#39;t thank you all enough - and look forward to coming back next year!

Dumsers across the street makes fried chicken to write home about. Southerners have nothing on them!

The chicken just wasn%26#39;t one bit greasy at all. Our waitress was awesome, as well.

This area of Ocean City is wonderful because it provides quiet yet everything you need. I called Coastal Highway - repeat highway. Every few blocks you go and see the same ';candy'; store, ';kite'; store and Dumsers after Dumsers. You don%26#39;t need to stay on the southern part of the island with kids. you can take them there and when you%26#39;ve had enough ';amusements'; and boardwalk -you can take them home to a quiet place where the beaches are clean and relaxing.

I searched and searched for a place to stay - and being a travel agent for 30 years, i normally pick high cost places - thinking i%26#39;ll enjoy it better. Huge lesson learned here. If i could - i%26#39;d give you my telephone number to prove it to you, but i%26#39;m sure they wouldn%26#39;t allow it. i hope you enjoy your stay.

    The Wonderful Seahawk and restaurants

Thanks so much for the review. It does sound like a great place. You%26#39;re right about the chicken..... awesome stuff.

You should copy and paste your post into the hotel review section.

    The Wonderful Seahawk and restaurants

Hi, Great review. We are from New Jersey also and have been staying at the SeaHawk every year for I can%26#39;t even tell you how long. We wouldn%26#39;t even think of staying anywhere else. Pam and Linda in the office are amazing. The rooms are definately clean, beds are comfortable, and the location as you mentioned is perfect. We are already counting the days until our vacation next year--SeaHawk here we come!!

Just out of curiosity, why do you have only a single review for this hotel if you are an agent and worldwide traveler.

Knights Inn - Travel Centers of America

I have read two reports on the Knights Inn in Jessup, MD. One said that it had ';Truckers Inn'; on the door of the room. Well, yea, because that%26#39;s what the name of the hotel was about ten years ago when Travel Centers of America took over and brought in Knights Inn to run the motel. Travel Centers of America (TA) runs truck stops throughout the country.

Another report said this place is more like a truck stop. Well, ding, ding, ding: it IS a truck stop.

The best way to get the place to move up to your standards is to contact TA and Knights Inn and tell them of your concerns.

Knights Inn - Travel Centers of America

I was there yesterday (October 1, 2008) and found these new situations ...

the all you can buffet is NOT offered on weekends anymore. They could not justify the overhead expense with the amount of or lack of customers, I should say that they got on Saturday and Sunday. The buffet is still offered on a Monday through Friday basis. I will say that when they do have the BBQ ribs (they are not offered on a daily basis, though) but when they ribs are offered, they are the best in the world.

The washing machines for the Knights Inn guests along with the truckers, motorists are RVers, used to be in a room that was very, very dirty. It was so bad that I used to want to wash my clothes again elsewhere because as soon as you brought them out of the machines, they got dirty just from the enviroment.

There have been some changes, new paint on the walls, dryers and washers pulled away from the walls and that floor area swept out. The machines themselves have been cleaned off and the floor is clean.

Very nice changes from what it used to be. It is greatly appreicated by me.

Knights Inn - Travel Centers of America

Oops, I forgot to add that they put doors on the door frames that lead into the laundry room. That was a great improvement from keeping down dusty things from coming into the laundry room and noise from the truckers theatre down the hall way. Very nice touch.

I have been reading the reviews of people that have stayed here, I agree with some of the comments.

What I would suggest is to call both customer service numbers and e-mail both customer service offices for Travel Centers of America and Knights Inn.

Tell them what was good, bad or indiffernt about the place and what improvements you would like to see made.

Ask if they have a ';secret shopper'; program and if so, how can you enroll in it.

  • BWI to the Sheraton Inner Harbor

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a free shuttle from BWI to the Sheraton? Thanks

BWI to the Sheraton Inner Harbor

No. Many of the hotels in the airport area have free shuttles, but not the downtown properties. If you go to the bwiairport.com web site you can review the options for getting into town from the airport.

BWI to the Sheraton Inner Harbor

Take the Light Rail to Camden yards and then walk the two blocks to the Sheraton. The light is less then $2/person and it takes about 20 minutes.

  • BWI to Aquarium

We%26#39;re staying at the Garden Inn at BWI the first of October and want to take the light rail to the Aquarium. Is the walk from the station to the aquarium doable (we%26#39;re able bodied but middle aged) and if so, what is the best route? About how much would it cost to take a taxi? Is there a nice seafood eatery close by? Thanks locals!

    BWI to Aquarium

    you can do it easily.

i think i%26#39;ll let tubman give you the specific directions, even though i%26#39;ve done it myself...i%26#39;m an idiot %26amp; SO bad at giving directions!

it%26#39;s a piece of cake, %26amp; easy to just ';walk to the water';....seems to me like just walk down pratt street is the way...

but wait %26amp; see what tubman says....sometimes i know how to get somewhere but can%26#39;t tell anybody else how to do it!

    BWI to Aquarium

The walk to the aquarium is 3/4 mile from Convention Center station. At the front end of your train will be Pratt Street--take a right.

After you cross Light Street, you%26#39;ll see the Harborplace complex on the right. At this point, you can either continue straight down Pratt, or bear right to do the more scenic walk the rest of the way along the waterfront.

    Taxi should be about $4.

    鈥tate.md.us/psc/Transportation/CityRates.pdf

Thanks guys! How about a good place to eat nearby? It sounds like we don%26#39;t want to eat at the aquarium.

You are within walking distance of Little Italy. Always a good choice. There are many new restaurant in the Inner Harbor East which I feel is a better choice thatn the Inner Harbor proper. What type of food are you looking for- what time of day?

We were thinking about a place in Fells Pt that%26#39;s supposed to have good crabcakes. Duda%26#39;s I think it%26#39;s called.

i%26#39;ve never been to duda%26#39;s myself, but my husband used to have lunch there with a friend of his, %26amp; he liked it a lot...he liked the burgers, don%26#39;t know if he ever had a crab cake. i%26#39;ve seen it recommended on TA, as well.

Fells point is a bit of hike from the aquarium. There are a bunch of restaurants in the inner harbor area that you will pass along your way. If none of those suit your fancy, then a few blocks east of the aquarium you will hit little Italy (you will see Della Notte which will be your clue). There are a ton of choices in the area, follow your stomach = )

Inner Harbor to Terps Football Stadium ?

Hi, Does anyone know an easy way to get from the Inner harbor to the Game on Nov. 29 NCSU vs Maryland? Possibly a shuttle, bus, train. We won%26#39;t have a car. Thanks

Inner Harbor to Terps Football Stadium ?

IS there any way you can get a car? Otherwise the options are pretty ';ugly'; rather than ';easy';.

You would have to take a taxi or light rail from downtown Baltimore out the BWI airport. From there, you can catch the B30 Metro bus to the Greenbelt station of Metro. (Metro is the Washington area%26#39;s subway/bus system). Once there, you get on a train and ride 4 stops to the West Hyattsville station. From there, you get on an F6 bus and ride to the edge of the UM campus, and then walk to the stadium.

Another route would be taking Amtrak from Baltimore%26#39;s Penn Station to the New Carrollton Amtrak station and picking up the F6 bus there for a fairly lengthy bus trip to the UM campus.

wmata.com for bus and train schedules.

Inner Harbor to Terps Football Stadium ?

Or take the Metro to UM from New Carrollton.

True, but that involves taking Metro all the way into DC and transferring to the Green line, then still having to get on a bus at West Hyattsville. 50 minutes on Metro from New Carrollton.

';Mary';, any way you do this trip is going to take several hours via public transportation.

There is a Marc train that runs from Camden Yards to College Park but it only runs on weekdays. The only other option is to take the light rail to BWI and from there catch the bus that takes your to Greenbelt and then the metro one stop to College Park. It takes ~1h15minutes. The bus from BWI is a nice bus with comfy seats. Just bring something to read and really the trip is not that bad.

Or try craigslist to see if you can hitch a ride down with someone.

    ';The only other option is to take the light rail to BWI and from there catch the bus that takes your to Greenbelt and then the metro one stop to College Park. It takes ~1h15minutes. ';

';If'; all the connections involved were exactly coordinated it might take 1 hour 15 minutes, but that%26#39;s probably a stretch.

How do you get from the College Park metro stop to the stadium? Despite the name, the ';College park - UMD'; station is some distance from the campus.

    Public Transportation to Laurel Park

Is there public transportation from Penn Station, Baltimore or Union Station, DC to Laurel Park on weekends?

    Public Transportation to Laurel Park

    In a word, no.

Laurel falls into sort of a public transportation no-man%26#39;s land falling halfway between Washington and Baltimore, getting weekday commuter service only into and from both cities.

You will need a taxi to get yourself to the track, which I suspect would run around $50 from downtown Washington or Baltimore. If you want to minimize this expense, you could always take public transit to the end of the lines closest to Laurel and taxi from there.

Coming from Washington, that would mean taking Metro%26#39;s Green Line to Greenbelt. From Baltimore, take the light rail to BWI airport.

    Public Transportation to Laurel Park

Thanks for the reply. You confirmed my thoughts. It is strange that any race track would not have some sort of public transportation on their busiest two days.

There is a bus service from the Cromwell light rail station which will get you to Laurel on Saturday (not Sunday) on a limited schedule. But you will need to change buses at Laurel Mall.

    http://www.corridortransit.com/schedules.html

Use the K to get to Laurel Mall, the the B or C to get you near the track.

Looks like a lot of work, I suspect you%26#39;ll be taxiing.

Baltimore is the LEAST public transportation friendly town EVER. EVER.

Lived here 32 year, my whole life. First time I ever took a bus was at the age of 17 and that was in Ocean City, not Baltimore. I%26#39;ve only ever taken a subway in NY (does Baltimore even have one?) And these days, taking a bus in Baltimore could cost you your life :(

    '; I%26#39;ve only ever taken a subway in NY (does Baltimore even have one?)';

You%26#39;ve lived in Baltimore for 32 years and don%26#39;t know? :)

(Yes, Baltimore has a subway - not much of one, but it exists. Trivia buffs can note that it often serves as the ';Washington Subway'; in movies, since Metro in DC rarely if ever lets film crews use their stations for scenes. TMI, sorry...)

    carey24,

Interesting you should choose this thread to lash out against Baltimore public transit. Convoluted as it is, note that the one public transit solution I was able to come up with for the OP originated from Baltimore, not Washington.

Before the Light Rail opened, I would have largely agreed about the inconvenience of transit in Baltimore. But most of the visitors to Baltimore who can make effective use of public transportation are staying in the Inner Harbor area and coming from the airport. Which, coincidentally, the Light Rail serves reliably and directly for just $1.60. Many other large U.S. cities (New York for one) have no rail service--cheap or otherwise--directly from their airport terminals into the heart of town.

As for taking your chances on the bus--have there been horrific incidents in recent memory? Absolutely. But random violence can happen anywhere, and most of the trouble on the MTA buses largely reflect the neighborhoods where the trips originate, end, and pass through. In short, the likelihood of a visitor needing to be on one of these routes is the same as his needing to be in one of the neighborhoods the bus serves--that is to say slim to none. And statistically, it%26#39;s still EXTREMELY unlikely you%26#39;ll be the victim of a crime if you take your chances on one of these routes.

Whether you%26#39;re riding public transportation or just walking through any part of a big city (not just Baltimore), you need to exercise big-city smarts. On public transportation, that means situating yourself as close to the operator as possible if you%26#39;re the least bit uncomfortable.

    Downtown Salisbury Shops

Are there any quaint little shops in downtown Salisbury? I will be going there with my husband at the end of October, he will be there on business and I would like to see some of the shops during the day. Would love to know if there is a good coffee shop downtown, also! Thank you!!!!

Coming from Florida tomorrow to watch our Rays play a double header at Camden Yards. Looking for good restaurant (and good value) without walking distance. If it has a view of the harbor and serves some of your famous crabs, so much the better

    Go Rays.

    good restaurant near camden yards?

Nicks Fish House on Insulator Rd at the base of the hanover St Bridge is not walkable for most people but is only about 1 1/2 miles from the stadium. Theu have really good crabcakes and other seafood dishes. Nice casual fun atmosphere. Their prices are comparable for seafood in the area. The immediate area around the stadium has alot of chain restaurants at the Inner Harbor area- steer clear of Phillips Seafood. If you would settle for a short scenic water taxi ride from the inner harbor over to Fells Point you could also try John Steven Ltd. If you really want walkable there is always O%26#39;Brycki%26#39;s CrabHouse and Seafood Restaurant on E. Pratt St. For a dinner entree of crabcakes you will probably spend between $20-25 dollars in the downtown area.

  • Take-out near Charles & Fayette

I take night classes (my classes this semester start at 7:30) at the JHU campus at Charles and Fayette. I always end up rushing to grab something to eat before I leave for class. Does anyone know if there is a decent take-out or sandwhich shop nearby (and open in evening) where I could grab a quick bite before class?

    Trip Report 9/22 - 10/02

My husband %26amp; I arrived just as the ';No Name'; tropical storm was getting started. Winds were 40 to 50 mph gusts, but the sun was shining. This lasted for four days with winds getting stronger each day. Then the hurricane off the coast of Maine was causing huge waves %26amp; very strong rip currents. Only the surfers could get in the water. It wasn%26#39;t safe for just swimmers. Sand came up over the walls of the boardwalk and they had to use bulldozers to remove it. It was a mess. We decided to make the best of it though and stayed anyways. We have some great pictures of the waves crashing on the rocks at the Inlet.

    Now for the restaurant report:

Hoopers - good, but don%26#39;t waste your money on the

    mixed drinks (watered down)

BonFire - great as usual (ate there twice)

    BellyBusters - I think they have the best peel %26amp;

    eat shrimp %26amp; flounder sandwiches

    on the beach.

Quality Inn @ 33rd - has a great breakfast with huge

    portions

    Happy Jacks - good breakfast

Harborside - good food and you can%26#39;t beat the Orange

    Crush

    Coins - had half price entrees on Sun., Tues., %26amp;

Thurs. Great atmosphere and good food.

Buxy%26#39;s Salty Dog - Poor service and snarky workers.

My order got messed up due to a

    non-English speaking waitress %26amp;

they refused to fix it. That was

the last time we will go there.

Fish Tales - You have got to be kidding me! Food was

mediocre and was served in plaster bowls

    and utensils. Way over priced.

Adolpho%26#39;s - fabulous Italian restaurant at the Inlet

    We were pleasantly surprised.

Dr. Unks - on 611 going towards Assateague. The best

find of all. We ate there 5 times. A

    great bar/restaurant that has the

coldest drafts in town. Vanessa and

    Emilie are great bartenders.

Well, that%26#39;s about it. I miss Ocean City already and can%26#39;t wait until the next visit.

**HOT** 24 HOURS and a Returning Solider at BWI**HELP

NEED INSTANT ADVICE COMMENTS and Recommendations!!

My hubby is returning from Iraq here in the next few days. I am fortunate enough to get to spend 24 hrs with him in the Port of entry.. before he goes to outprocess in Montana while I hold down the for in Western NC. ..

HELP! I need advice on the BEST hotel.. Around $150.00 a night.. close to a GREAT Steak or PRIME RIB.. For my Airman...that serves a cold Miller lite .. if possible.. Then again.. a nice clean comfortable hotel near BWI Airport for the Shuttle!! We only got 24 hrs.. so My hubby wants a great dinner and some time with Momma!!

Any thoughts IDEA and comments.. good or bad is greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks Jennifer

**HOT** 24 HOURS and a Returning Solider at BWI**HELP

Ok.. Support our troops.. I need some help here!!

    ANyone??

**HOT** 24 HOURS and a Returning Solider at BWI**HELP

ok I%26#39;ve lived in Baltimore all of my life, so I%26#39;ve never had to stay at the airport. I%26#39;ll try to help....here goes...

I%26#39;d stay at the Marriott BWI 1743 W Nursery Rd. 21240

I checked mid-oct and it%26#39;s $119/night. Looks nice and Marriott has a decent reputation; airport shuttle service complementary

If it is NOT rush hour (7-9am, 4-6pm)...I would get a cab (ask the hotel when you check in for cab #%26#39;s, call them right then and tell them what time to pick you up, that way you%26#39;re not waiting around for the cab) and head to Baltimore%26#39;s Inner Harbor. Should be like 20-25 min if no traffic, maybe less.

At the Harbor, for steak, you can do:

Ruth%26#39;s Chris-chain, but my fav, and I LOVE steak

    Flemings-also really good

both only give wine lists online, but I%26#39;ve never seen a restuarant that doesnt have miller lite in baltimore.

You can then walk around the Harbor if the night is nice.

Take a cab to Fells Point (catch one at the Inner Harbor Pavillions, Pratt St) and go to local pubs there. Or you can take the water taxi over (depending on the time, I think they stop around 8pm).

In Fells Point, Max%26#39;s on Broadway (Broadway %26amp; Lancaster) has an upstairs cigar bar lounge and they have literally 100 beers on tap. Guys love it.

Walk around Fells Point. All little shops, pubs, etc.

If you can give more specific time details I may be able to help more.

I would also call the hotel, not book online, and tell them the situation. Tell them about late/early check-in, ask what you can do over the phone to expedite the check-in process, explain about Iraq (they may even give you some extras in the room-worth a shot), ask if there is anything special they do can do for honeymoon couples or along those lines to make the stay as romantic as possible.

Thanks So Much!! VERY HELPFUL and Great IDEAS!! I am on it..

i have no advice, but just want to say i hope you both have a WONDERFUL reunion %26amp; enjoy every minute of it!

Also have never had to stay in a Baltimore hotel but here goes. Try the Four Points Sheraton- its 1/2 mile to airport and has compl. shuttle. Prev writer suggestions are good for Ruth%26#39;s Chris or Flemings. You get consistently good steak and atomsphere is good. If you want to forget the romantic atmosphere and get good beef try Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse at the Inner Harbor. Also a chain but really good variety of beef/ steaks. Check out their website. Take a walk around the harbor and then take a cab back to hotel. Only a few miles. Have fun!!

    Thanks... to all!!

I think Hubby wants some dinner and Then we will catch up..

He says he wants a BIG bed and a cool dark room.. after being in that sun for a year!!

    Thanks all!!

Well.. He is coming in BWI mid afternoon. 10/5. He doesnt want to fancy.. and doesnt want stale either.

SO I have decided on Holiday Inn BWI airport..

Since I have Priorty club.. and there is a restaurant and bar.. He wants a Miller Lite.. cant blame him.. Big bed dark cold room..and ME! LOL..

    Total oppisite of IRAQ!

MY AIRMAN IS COMING HOME%26gt;%26gt; I AM IN TEARS%26gt; He left OCT 08, 2007 and I will bein his arms October 5!!

Noone has clue until you lived it..

Thanks for the replies and keep em coming if you have any advice!!

    I am so !@%@$%# HAPPY!!!

    Jennifer Grace

i%26#39;m so jealous. my husband passed away 4 years ago at age 36 and your story brings tears to my eyes.

try G %26amp; M and get the crabcakes. any of the nearby bwi hotels should work. enjoy! and thanks to your hubby for serving our country.

    don%26#39;t go to G %26amp; M...the man wants a STEAK, not a crab cake!

I understand that G %26amp; M has highly touted crab cakes, but the ambience is not the greatest. let him have a steak if that%26#39;s what he wants!

    help--eastern shore destination wedding

Hi all--can you help me out? We are looking for an eastern shore inn or locale that would be a great destination wedding spot. Ideally we would be able to have the inn for our wedding exclusively for the weekend sometime next spring or summer, and then be able to have other guests stay pretty nearby if they can%26#39;t stay with us. I have looked at Kent Manor Inn (they do 4 weddings per weekend) and The Oaks. I don%26#39;t need to stay in St. Michaels, and would really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

    help--eastern shore destination wedding

I went to a wedding at the Kent Manor and it was really wonderful. I am extremely picky and I would have my wedding there. The reception was in the glass enclosure outside the Inn and even tho it was winter, it was breathtaking.

    help--eastern shore destination wedding

Some other options, although not all inns, would be:

St. Michaels - Inn at Perry Cabin (expensive but awesome); Harbortowne (cool waterfront location but bigger than an inn)

Chestertown - Brampton Inn (never been to a wedding here but considering a stay and it looks very nice), Great Oak (been to a couple of weddings here, they do a nice job), the Imperial Hotel (not sure if they could accomidate a reception but would be good place for overflow guests to stay)

I have to agree with the previous poster that Chestertown would be another option. Rock Hall is another town on the bay in Kent County that has some nice inns; I%26#39;ve seen a few destination weddings throughout the summer, and this town has plenty of motels/inns to accomodate guests. It%26#39;s also probably half the price of St. Michael%26#39;s wedding spots.

    Good luck!!!!

Check out www.tidewaterwedding.com for Kirkland Manor. Fabulous spectacular setting -- there is nothing else like the waterfront views and sunsets at this venue.

Hi - have you tried Kirkland Manor which is between Easton and St Michaels. The Manor is on a large estate with gorgeous views of the Miles River. One can rent the Manor for the whole weekend (all for yourself and guests) - can host up to 400 guests.

They only do one wedding a weekend so very private.

You can see details of the venue on their website www.tidewaterwedding.com - the home acccommodates 12 and they have a sister home that acccommodates 10. There are numerous hotels and B %26amp; B%26#39;s in the area. One can hold your rehearsal dinner on the Friday, ceremony and reception on the Saturday and a brunch for your guests on a Sunday. It is absolutely beautiful.

    Dear all

    Please give some advise

I have to attend a conference next year in May at the above hoteland I am looking for cheap accomodation anywhere but with good travel connections to this conference venue. This will be my first visit to US and on one forum people have recommended not to stay closer to this place as it is unsafe. Can someone let me know where to live and also which airport will be closer to it.I will be flying from Europe.

cheap accomodation nearGaylord National Hotel Washington DC

I agree with the general sentiment of what you read earlier. Gaylord National is a bit of an oasis in an area otherwise in the earliest stages of gentrification.

The challenge is that you don%26#39;t want to stay anywhere close east or south of Gaylord, and anything north towards Washington will likely be as expensive as Gaylord.

Hotels in Alexandria, Virginia (west of Gaylord, across the river) will probably be less expensive in a nicer area, but that leaves you with the need to cross the river. If you don%26#39;t have a car, public transportation options are very limited. If you need to take a taxi or shuttle, that may negate any savings you realize. Note that Gaylord charges $19/day to park your own (rental) car.

Also look at hotels near Reagan National Airport. Reagan would be the preferred airport, but they only handle domestic air traffic only (you would need to connect from/to U.K. through an international airport, e.g. Boston or New York), and flights are typically more expensive than the other airports further from Gaylord. The SuperShuttle from Reagan to Gaylord runs both ways every half-hour at a cost of $22 each way.

How much are the accomodations offered at Gaylord, and for what specific nights are you looking? You may need to bite the bullet and pay them because of the lack of affordable, comfortable options nearby. For my money, it wouldn%26#39;t be worth the hassle to stay elsewhere if the room price differential is under $100/night.

cheap accomodation nearGaylord National Hotel Washington DC

Just to clarify--the National Harbor area is safe and there are other decent hotels right there besides the Gaylord (Hampton Inn, Westin).

But if those others at the National Harbor complex aren%26#39;t cheap enough for you, avoid the other hotels in the Oxon Hill area entirely.

    Dinner in Little Italy?

I%26#39;m staying at the Marriott Waterfront at the beginning of Aliceanna Street this week and looking for a quiet, reasonably priced ($25/person) place to have dinner within a few blocks of the hotel. If Little Italy is actually still Italian (unlike, say the Little Italy in NYC) then pasta would be great. Otherwise, maybe new American.

Also, the last time I was in that area was in 1996, and at that time the few blocks between the Inner Harbor and Little Italy were a somewhat scary area. You definitely didn%26#39;t want to walk to Fells Point because you%26#39;d be going past some really rundown projects, if I remember correctly. Is that still the case?

    Thanks!

    Dinner in Little Italy?

That area is now ';Harbor East'; and is probably one of the safest in the city. Very upscale, with a Whole Foods and nice bars and restaurants.

I%26#39;ve always liked Sabatino%26#39;s and Chiaparelli%26#39;s myself, both in Littly Italy.

Or Kali%26#39;s Mezze which is in Fells Point which is mediterranean tapas.

    Dinner in Little Italy?

It will be a very easy and safe walk from your hotel to Little Italy. I%26#39;d walk around and look at the menus. I like Germano%26#39;s and Amicci%26#39;s. Check out Cinghaile in the Inner Harbor East for some excellent Italian and great wine list. I also like Lebanese Taverna in the same area.

    cool places to go

Check out the City Paper%26#39;s ';Best of Baltimore'; link.

    www.citypaper.com/bob/winners.asp…

You should be able to find something of interest.

The best place to be is in Fells Point. For good music and good people try The Cat%26#39;s Eye Pub on Thames Street. You can check out their web page to find out who might be playing. Also in Fell%26#39;s Point you can find alot of great places to eat. Park you car and you can walk to just about everything.

    A few suggestions:

American Visionary Art Museum - great museum full of wonderful, if not odd, art. Plus, it%26#39;s near the Inner Harbor and Federal Hill.

    http://www.avam.org/

Walk the waterfront if the weather is nice - lots of great places to eat and things to do along the way.

    waterfrontpartnership.org/_fileCabinet/resta…

    www.waterfrontpartnership.org/visitus.aspx

If you wind up in Canton, eat at Jack%26#39;s Bistro - lots of creative things to eat. Harbor East area - go to Pazo - great menu, maybe the best dining room in B-more

You can never go wrong with the ESPN zone.

well, it WOULD help a great deal to know his interests!

the aquarium is great. i%26#39;d second the suggestion of geppi%26#39;s museum (even though i%26#39;ve yet to go there, i really want to!) %26amp; that could even be combined with a trip to the ';sports legends'; museum, %26amp; a look at the ballpark. historic places to eat nearby could be burke%26#39;s cafe or the lexington market.

if art is an interest at all, the baltimore museum of art is pretty wonderful %26amp; you can see ';the woodlawn vase';, which is the pre-civil war trophy that is presented to the winner of the Preakness Stakes every year...the most valuable trophy in all of sports.

fells point is very nice, too...depends what he likes.

Where did he move exactly? Happy to give you some tips, you looking for nightlife/dining or more daytime activities?

    Planning trip

Hi I am planning a trip for a weekend at the end of November 22-24). We are planning on staying at a private cabin (offlakerentals - anyone use before?)and have a few activities arranged - shopping, murder mystery train ride on Saturday, going to Frostburg for the university and some of their activities for that Sunday. Can anyone suggest some local places that have Monday day kid friendly activities either in Oakland or on the way back to DC? Music? Sports? Sites to take in? We really were trying to go snow tubing if there was snow but I called Wisp and they do not open for their season until the following weekend (also no mountain coaster!) Is Smiley%26#39;s a big enough place to keep someone entertained for a few hours on a Monday afternoon in late November (assuming everything outside would be closed or too cold to do anyways)? Any suggestions of local happening for that weekend in general? Thanks in advance.

  • Which do you like ? Bayside or Ocean

I am just curious as to hear what side of OC people like to stay when vacationing. Both have good pros. The only con I see is from bayside is trying to cross Coastal hwy to get to the beach..problem if you have kids. I like both, I switch off and stay in either one. If you have a boat you can drop your boat in from bayside if you have dockage. You can fish from bayside too. I like looking out at the ocean at all times and the convenience of not walking far to the beach from ocean side. I talk to some people that are adamant about either. How about you ?

Which do you like ? Bayside or Ocean

    I love bayside.

The main reason is in the summer I just hide back here, sit on my deck, and drink Captain Morgan waiting for the off season. LOL

Which do you like ? Bayside or Ocean

hi I like Ocean Side because of Coastal highway. Whenever I look at the web cam of Coastal the highway is dead but when I go it is busy very busy even to cross it get to a eatery or an amusement is tough or a store. At night it is crazy. I guess I like my Ocean side. Nice post.

That%26#39;s a toss up for me. I%26#39;ve stayed bayside before and really enjoyed it. Sitting on your own deck watching the sunset at night is great and relaxing.

But I really really like ocean front. I can spend hours watching the waves and the beauty%26#39;s walk by.

Plus you can beat a nice sunrise.

    bayside all the way

Personally, it is no contest, ocean side by a landslide. I just enjoy the convenience of being close to the condo. Restroom, air conditions, food, and beverage ... all steps away are key. Not to mention not having to lug all the beach stuff across Coastal Highway (especially at the end of a long hot day).

Some bayside units are okay, but I%26#39;d take the convenience of oceanside any time.

My vote is for Oceanside !

Either side gives you a great view, depends on taste. However, if you are not near the boardwalk being on the ocean side has its advantages when it comes to bathroom use, breaks from the beach, cocktails. If you have kids it is even a bigger drag having to go back to your room for an assortment of needs. For that reason I always have opted for the ocean side for sheer convenience.

    Tom

    oceanfront for sure

    Hotwire question

I just finished reading the Temple game hotel post. We also have tickets to that game and I am looking at Hotwire that has a 3.5 star hotel location Annapolis but it also says it is 15 miles from BWI. Does anyone have any idea what this hotel is? We live in Northern Virginia and plan to drive to Annapolis Saturday AM and spend the night drive home Sunday afternoon. Glad Annapolis doesn%26#39;t require two night minimum for football week-end since we need to be home for Halloween!!!!! :)

    Hotwire question

Sorry about the lack of a response! This just isn%26#39;t ringing a bell with me - I don%26#39;t think any hotel within the Annapolis Zip code(s) would be within 15 miles of BWI. ANybody else?

    Hotwire question

Are you sure you%26#39;re not misreading what Hotwire is presenting? When I ran a search, the 3.5* that was returned is in the BWI area, 15 miles from Annapolis, not the other way around.

Go to betterbidding.com and search for annapolis md. They have the tips from folks who bid and what criteria you need to give in order to get the best place. Remember though that Hotwire tends to pad their star value. A 3.5 usually is a 2.5 so that could be a budget hotel. Priceline star value is more accurate. This site covers both and you might get swayed to use Priceline.

    Hotel for Football Game

My husband and son are considering going to the Navy Temple game in a couple of weeks. If anyone could recommend where they should stay, I would really appreciate it. A decent hotel close to the stadium and maybe a place to grab dinner the night before.

    Thank you.

    Hotel for Football Game

The Sheraton has rooms for Saturday, Nov. 1 starting at $159.00. It is reasonably close to the stadium, and very close to the mall as well as several restaurants (mostly chains, but pretty good - Fuddrucker%26#39;s, Famous Daves, McCormick %26amp; Schmick, Copelands). If they want more upscale dining options, let us know - there%26#39;s are lots of choices in and around the Annapolis Area. Sheraton does offer a free shuttle, but I am not sure of the details.

    Hotel for Football Game

If you have never been to Annapolis, it is quite a compact area as it pertains to the historic district, where many of the charming homes, boutiques, and eateries are. In this area, you will find four major hotels that may be offering some decent rates. Marriott waterfront (usually always expensive), O%26#39;Callaghan%26#39;s, Loew%26#39;s, and the brand new Westin Hotel.

The Navy Stadium is considered to be in ';West Annapolis';, which you can walk to. The last three hotels mentioned would be closer than the Marriott and Westin would be closest to the stadium.

All of these hotels are close to restaurants and other sites. There are also quite a few B%26amp;B%26#39;s in the historic district - check out discoverourtown.com/MD/…Lodging-1675.html

If you want to look on the outskirts, where prices may be lower but transportation will be needed, than check out properties near the Westgate Mall area. They include, Sheraton, Doubletree, Marriott Courtyard, Hilton Garden, etc. They are listed at the link above. Since it is near the mall, chain restaurants abound such as Romano%26#39;s Macaroni Grill, Red Lobster, Red Robin, Outback Steakhouse, Bertucci%26#39;s, Famous Dave%26#39;s etc.

Personally, if I could get a good rate, I would choose the Westin, a beautiful property on the fringe of the historic district w/many restaurants nearby. Carpaccio%26#39;s (Italian) and Fado%26#39;s (Irish Pub) and Morton%26#39;s steakhouse located right in the same complex as the hotel. Greystone Grill, is right across the street.

Thank you both for your responses. We went with the Westin as they have a promotion where second night you only have to pay your birth year. My husband is flying into BWI on Friday night arriving around 8 pm and then leaving sunday in the morning. He plans on having a tour of the Navy Academy and going to the football game on Saturday. Do you think he should rent a car or just take the super shuttle to and from the airport. My understanding is the navy academy is a reasonable walk from the Westin. Thank you.

I would skip the car. The stadium is about 1/2-3/4 mile from the hotel. I think a car would be a hindrance. If the hotel doesn%26#39;t have a downtown shuttle (check -many do) the harbor area is walkable from the Westin- even if he had a car, he would drive it about 1/2 mile to the parking garage, and then walk, anyway. As long as he is reasonably fit, he will be able to walk most anywhere he wants to go. Like everywhere else, be alert after dark and avoid walking alone- stick to the busy streets. I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;ll have a great time.

Thank you for all your help!

swmd, glad they still had the birth year promotion at the Westin. Hope they have a great time. Be sure to let us know how everything went! Happy travels.

    Drive or take the bus?

We%26#39;ll be at OC this weekend thru Tuesday and are staying at the Rodeway Inn.

We%26#39;ll have our 3 year old son with us so we won%26#39;t be able to walk the whole boardwalk so I was wondering if it would be better to drive to the inlet lot or maybe try to find a spot on the side streets or if we would be better off taking the bus.

Since its Columbus Weekend and the car show is going on I wasn%26#39;t sure how parking would be and if the buses would be crowded. I just want the easiest way to and from the hotel especially if we%26#39;re dealing with a tired 3 year old.

    Drive or take the bus?

I have never been to OC Columbus weekend. However I do believe that driving to the boardwalk area will not be too much of a hassle. The large lot at the inlet should have space, even at its busiest in the summer it is not always full. In the unlikely event that it is full simply head over to the bay side where they have meter parking (you pay for a ticket at a parking kiosk and leave in your windshield). Two blocks and you are on the boardwalk. Either way I would drive and have the convenience of your car and perhaps the stroller.

    Drive or take the bus?

Car show is at the Inlet Parking Lot.Most likely it will be closed to parking.

I would also drive and find a spot to park in the downtown area. You shouldn%26#39;t have too much of a problem. There are several not so publicized parking lots in the downtown area besides the main one at the inlet. About half the inlet parking lot will be closed off for the car show. Unfortunately, parking meters are enforced until October 15th (I think), so you will have to feed money into of those kiosks and put the receipt with the time stamp on your dashboard (as tpoid mentioned) so the local meter nazi%26#39;s can see you are paid up. I also recommend you put plenty of time on the meter, because the meter nazi%26#39;s are like ';flies on s***'; when it comes to expired parking time.

Buses run every 15 minutes this time of year from 10 am to 6 pm and every 30 minutes after 6 pm. That could get to be a very long wait for a 3 year old...plus you would have to walk across Baltimore Ave. and Coastal highway to catch a bus going in the south bound direction from where you are staying.

Thank you! I never thought of having to cross Coastal Highway to get the bus. I really don%26#39;t want to have to deal with that so we%26#39;ll drive down. We%26#39;ll have to search out some of the other lots so we don%26#39;t have to worry about feeding the meter.

I wish it wasn%26#39;t so expensive to ride the tram, that would be the perfect solution but $9 each ride is insane!!

  • What's near Rodeway Inn??

We%26#39;re going to be staying at the Rodeway Inn this weekend from Saturday till Tuesday. We stayed there a few years ago but I can%26#39;t remember what%26#39;s on the boardwalk in that area.

Are there many stores or restaurants/food stands?

    What's near Rodeway Inn??

Actually, you will be one block north of the northern end of the Boardwalk.

That area, the northern most end of the Boardwalk, is not filled with as many commercial businesses as the parts south.

As far as places to eat you have Coins located at 28th and the coastal highway, you could have a meal at the Dunes Manor Hotel located at 28th oceanfront, Anthony%26#39;s located on 30th and the coastal highway.

Within walking distance you have both stores, food stores, and places to eat that would suit most tastes.

Plus this time of year you can drive with relative ease around the area if needed.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

    What's near Rodeway Inn??

Every thing it is a great location but not so great motel. But the bordwalk is right there half of a block from the boardwalk.

Thank yoiu for all the info.

Just curious as to why you say it%26#39;s a ';not so great motel';? It%26#39;s has good reviews on here and from what I remember it was nice, not 4 star hotel nice but it was nice enough.

The Rodeway Inn has two buildings. One is an older, less expensive motel style facing the parking lot and the Coastal Highway. I have not stayed in this building. The other building is much newer and oceanfront. Several years ago it was voted the top Rodeway in the country. It has interior corridors, nice furnishings, big balconys, and rooms with a sofa, small table, and kitchen area. I have stayed in this building many times and found it to be an excellent place to stay. I think the differences between these two buildings may explain some of the divergence of opinion that has been on this board before concerning the Rodeway.

Thank you for clearing that up. We are staying in an oceanfront room on an upper floor. I really wanted oceanfront which is the reason we ended up so far down at the end of the boardwalk, everything else was booked up.

Oh you will have a wonderful time. You are close to Coins, Phillips, Da Vinci%26#39;s and several italian and seafood eateries on Coastal. Dont forget the Christmas Shoppe on 34th street and Coastal Highway. Have a wonderful time and great weather!!
