There%26#39;s a reason it%26#39;s cheap! Oxon Hill is not a good area for a tourist to stay in.

Stay away from Oxon Hill...
UNLESS you are staying at the new National Harbor complex which has a Gaylord Hotel and a Hampton Inn (Hampton opened April 3, 2008) so far as part of the hotel offerings.
Which still doesn%26#39;t make it a very convenient location for touring Washington DC...
Actually downtown via 295/395 was only 15 minutes without traffic. I timed it. I can tell you they have HEAVY security around here. I was surprised since it is just two hotels opened and a big construction area for the rest of the project but after reading some posts on here about Oxon Hill, I guess I see where the security is needed. I didn%26#39;t feel anywhere near afraid though whether daylight or night as plenty of security was present in vehicles and on foot.
Can someone tell me how far the Gaylord/Hampton Inn is from a metro station? TIA
It is five miles from the King Street (Alexandria, VA) station and about the same to the Branch Avenue stop.
But if you%26#39;re asking in the hopes of finding inexpensive public transportation to/from those hotels, it might as well be 500 miles since AFAIK it%26#39;s nonexistent.
The only way to get there is with your own car, taxi, water taxi from old town Alexandria, or the hotel%26#39;s own $huttle or car $ervices.
There is a new metrobus route a few times per hour, from National Harbour to the Southern Avenue metrorail station (whose parking spaces, like all stations, fill up quite early on weekday mornings). Details are at http://www.wmata.com . That said, you may feel uneasy with the class of people you see on and around the train in the southeast part of D.C. I grew up and lived in Oxon Hill for much of my life.
