The Rideau

The last time I stayed here was about 10 years ago and the place was really old, run down and dirty. Has this place been re-done? Not looking for the Hilton, but do want a clean place and updated place.

Looking for a clean, cheap place with pool between 1 and 10th streets, any suggestions if the Rideau is not a good one?

I TOTALLY disagree with the posted comments!! When was that person there the last time??? IF you HAVE NOT BEEN THERE THEN KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF! I was there LAST summer in a large oceanfront room and it was great! The owners are UPDATING every room and all will be non-smoking the view from the balcony can%26#39;t be beat! The rooms are LARGE and CLEAN. Yes the bathrooms need work - but I%26#39;m sure that would be a very expensive undertaking. The pool is VERY clean and the parking is very convenient. I would suggest getting a lower level room because walking the stairs can be tiring. Also, rather than bashing -without due cause - I think we need to support these smaller ';mom and pop'; motels that have not SOLD OUT to big corporations and build monsterous condos on the Boardwalk! YES, I plan to stay there again! See my pictures for the TRUTH!!

Well, haven%26#39;t been there in yrs and maybe it does looks nicer with a coat of paint but no way it compares to the newer hotels in OC now. Your quote ';get a first floor room'; why? Because there are no elevators, so if your handicaped or don%26#39;t get around very well then this hotel is terrible for you.

Plus a family will need to make multiple trips to take their belongings to the second floor.

Second, your quote ';except the bathrooms'; whats that mean, ther%26#39;re still in shambles, need cleaning what?

Also keep in mind while some might like it but the hotel is in dead center of the bussiest/loudest part of the boardwalk. The place might be okay but for the single, non families or young adults that can get around quite well.

I don%26#39;t believe the OP was asking for a comparison between the Rideau and the newer hotels in OC. In fact, Rodfan even stated he/she wasn%26#39;t looking for the Hilton, but a clean place and an updated one that is cheap with a pool between 1st and 10th Streets.

There%26#39;s lots of nice older hotels and motels in OC that don%26#39;t have elevators. Why would you suggest that the Rideau would be terrible for someone who is handicapped or can%26#39;t get around very well? If they get a 1st floor room as bsg5698 states in their post then what would be so terrible? Most families have to make multiple trips using an elevator as well and depending on the crowd and the wait to use it, going up one floor could prove to be faster using the stairs than waiting for an elevator.

I saw bsg5698%26#39;s pictures in the review and the bathroom does not appear to be in shambles or need cleaning from what could be seen. Perhaps it%26#39;s just outdated and probably wasn%26#39;t renovated with the rest of the room. That doesn%26#39;t mean its in shambles. Believe me, I%26#39;ve seen pics and been to places where the bathrooms have been in shambles and the pics of the bathroom that I seen of the Rideau that bsg5698 provided don%26#39;t compare. To me, it looks like just a simple bathroom, nothing more.

Again, the OP asked for a hotel in the middle of the action. If Rodfan didn%26#39;t want to be there, I don%26#39;t think they would have asked for suggestions of places to stay between 1st and 10th Streets.

Exactly BBear64! This is a girls weekend, us ';girls are in our early 40%26#39;s, but this is a trip we%26#39;ve been doing for 20 years now, every year. We do family trips and other trips during the year also, so, didnt%26#39; want to spend over $300 a night, if at all possible, but want to be on the boardwalk, have a nice view and clean room, want to be in walking distance to Purple moose and restaurants, as once I park for that weekend, I do not drive anywhere, as we do a bit of drinking on our girls weekend, time to let our hair down, no kids, no hubby, etc. We have stayed at Tidelands Carribean, The Commander, Paradise Plaza, Quality inn boardwalk, etc. We have also stayed at small cheap older places as well, like The Madison Beach, Eden Roc, etc. Was thinking of the Park Place as that looks nice, new and clean, it%26#39;s more then the Rideau and the cheapest room is a bayview room, the room looks so small, the beds look like they are touching each other, its 5 women, so we need some room.

I was responding to the poster who complained about my original comment. It could very well be okay but like I said its been awhile since I was there but there are no elevators and was not in good shape in the past. Its also right in the smack center of everything which ';I like'; but cleaness is subject to opinion. Rodfan says going with a group of girls might want a cleaner room, a more upscale type of stay in OC. Now If I was going with the guys the Rideau would be perfect but I would not recommend to families and the elderly. Its all in their cup of tea.

Park Place, Tidelands or the Commander are good choices Rodfan.

Take a normal family of 4,(kids under 8--no help from kids) 4 suitcases, a couple of beach bags, a cooler, a few bags of snacks, a beach chair, some extra toys for the room and misc items. How many trips do I need for second floor room?

Make note those luggage carts don%26#39;t go well up the stairs.

So whats easier here:

-20 trips upstairs carring luggage. or

-using a luggage cart, waiting an extra minute or two and I%26#39;m on vacation so I don%26#39;t mind waiting for the elevator that way I can make just two trips to the room.

Perhaps in your first post you should have told the OP that you hadn%26#39;t been there in years. And, if you haven%26#39;t been there in years then how exactly do you know that it%26#39;s in the same or worse shape than before?

I agree it%26#39;s all in their cup of tea and since Rodfan indicated they weren%26#39;t looking for an upscale Hilton type and they wanted in the middle of the action, perhaps the Rideau is just what they%26#39;re looking for.

As for the no elevators and carrying your baggage up to the second floor, I have no idea how many trips it would take you, but I think 20 is a little bit of an exaggeration for anyone. Luggage carts? Good luck in getting all that stuff on one cart, LOL.

Again, this goes to preference, you may want to wait for an elevator while on vacation, I on the other hand, would welcome the exercise while on vacation and wouldn%26#39;t have a problem carrying my luggage and other stuff up a flight of stairs.

As for common sense, it just depends on what your definition of common sense is.
