My husband has business in the area (staying at the Rockville Sheraton) and we%26#39;re wondering if there%26#39;s good biking nearby. If so, we%26#39;d bring our bikes and hope to do maybe 3-4 hours of riding. We were once on the C%26amp;O canal (many years ago) and I remember enjoying it very much. Is anything of the sort near Rockville? (This will be mid-week.)
What%26#39;s the C%26amp;O canal path like these days? Perhaps it%26#39;s worth driving there and doing some of that again? (I vaguely remember starting in Georgetown.)
Thanks!

Not sure about the Rockville area - but you can get to the C%26amp;O trail in well under an hour. It is still in good shape in that area. You can get on in Potomac at great falls or if you head out toward Harpers Ferry you can get on just on the Maryland side of the river - Off of keep tryst road. You can ride into Harpers Ferry or there are some great ovelooks you can hike up to.
If yu weant to go a little further - baltimore has 2 railroad bed trails - the B%26amp;A trail runs from the airport into Annapolis. Thats a great full day ride down %26amp; back.
The NCR trails runs from Baltimore to York PA. I have only ridden parts of that.

The canal is great because you don%26#39;t have to deal with cars at all and on weekdays there won%26#39;t be too much foot traffic/kids/dogs, etc. The fastest access from Rockville would be I-270 south toward Northern Virginia, where it will merge with the beltway (495). Get over to the right (you%26#39;ll have plenty of time) and take the Cabin John Parkway toward Washington/Glen Echo. That will merge onto the Clara Barton Parkway heading toward DC, and there are various pull-offs/parking lots where you can park right next to the canal. Go downstream (left facing the Potomac River) to get to Georgetown, or upstream (right facing river) to go toward Great Falls.
An alternative is the Rock Creek trail which passes just east of Rockville along Rock Creek. This trail goes all the way to Georgetown and can be accessed at dozens of places. Find Rock Creek Park on any local map or mapquest for roads that cross or run along the park. If you ride all the way to Georgetown, keep in mind that you will be heading upstream on the way back, and, depending on your condition, this can be a factor. (I prefer a steep hill rather than a long, slight incline).
Have fun.
Thanks for the very helpful replies.
I think the last person who responded, gave wrong directions, concerning the C%26amp;O towpath. Don%26#39;t you mean, to bicycle LEFT facing the Potomac River to bike upstream to Great Falls, and RIGHT facing the Potomac River to bike downstream to Georgetown.
